About This CME Teaching Activity
 This CME Activity is a practical and comprehensive review of a variety of topics in surgical pathology including gastrointestinal, genitourinary, head and neck, soft tissue and hepatic pathology. Faculty share diagnostic pearls which lead to an accurate diagnosis as well as how to best avoid important diagnostic pitfalls. Presentations focus on pertinent diagnostic immunohistochemical and molecular genetic techniques which allow the pathologist to refine the diagnosis.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this CME activity, subscribers should be able to:

  • Recognize the major diagnostic pitfalls in the diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus and Barrett’s-related dysplasia.
  • Discuss the more recently recognized variants of ulcerative colitis as well as some of the issues related to diagnosing dysplasia in the setting of IBD.
  • Identify some of the major diagnostic issues in the most common colorectal polyps including serrated polyps.
  • Recognize the soft tissue tumor types which are prone to misdiagnosis.
  • Use and interpret modern diagnostic techniques in the evaluation of soft tissue tumors.
  • Explain the spectrum of benign spindle cell lesions in the breast.
  • List the anatomic locations where HPV-related carcinomas typically occur.
  • Describe the typical morphology of HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinoma.
  • Name some of the newer gene fusions associated with salivary gland tumors.
  • Recognize the most important diagnostic challenges in assessing prostate needle biopsies.
  • Discuss diagnostic pitfalls in bladder biopsy and TURBT specimens.
  • Name the entities associated with eosinophilic cytoplasm in renal tumors.
  • Identify the biliary pattern of injury on liver biopsy.
  • Recognize distinguishing features of steatosis from steatohepatitis.
  • List the appropriate immunohistochemical work-up of primary liver tumors.
